7 Reasons to hire a Professional Photographer in Durango CO for your Wedding

I’ve spoken to lots and lots of ladies who had a friend or family member photograph their wedding and they totally regret that decision. Their images were too dark, blown out, blurry, people’s body parts cut off – you get the picture (yes, I threw in an unintended pun). I bet you know someone who has said the same thing. Here are some reasons to actually hire a professional photographer in Durango CO to photograph your wedding – one of the most important days of your life.

  1.  Your friend or family member should be enjoying the wedding, not running around trying to capture everything going on.
  2.  He or she probably doesn’t have a second shooter to help capture moments that you and the main photographer might have missed.
  3.  He or she probably doesn’t have back up equipment in case something fails. I’ve only had this happen one time, but I had back up, so all was well.
  4.  Most weddings we photograph do not have a wedding planner available to set the timeline and make sure everything is running smoothly. In these cases, we step in to keep everything going as it should. We want to make sure we have enough time to capture all of the beautiful photographs you want for your family heirlooms.
  5. Your friend probably doesn’t have the experience to even know how stressful weddings can be. Professionals have lots of experience, education, and gear to make sure your day is perfect (well, as perfect as possible).
  6. Many of us charge about as much as you are paying for your flowers, yet we are with you all day, and spend weeks beautifying your images. It’s a value that can’t be stated enough.
  7. You’ll be moved to tears of joy with your wedding images, instead of tears of despair over the friend’s photos that didn’t turn out very well.

We get super excited when we’re chosen to photograph a couple’s wedding. We’re fully invested and want to make you so happy with your choice. We even offer a 100% money back guarantee that you will love your images, or we’ll return your full investment.

Portraits of mom and her two grown sons by Photographers in Durango CO

My husband and I are family portrait photographers in Durango CO. We are also wedding photographers, boudoir photographers, and senior high school photographers near Durango CO. We serve the entire southwestern area of Colorado and Farmington NM.

VeAnn and Waylon (the older boy) live in Durango, but Colby came from Denver to spend the holidays here, so we did some family portraits of them together since they don’t see each other often enough.  We did some fun images with their sun glasses, and then each boy had a dog so we did a portrait with their pet.  I took separate images of each of them and made a tryptich, (the photo with the 3 separate portraits of each one, which makes for a great wall hanging.  VeAnn is getting an image box with 7 of their portraits that are mounted on styrene and sprayed for protection.  It’s a beautiful way to display images.

VeAnn purchased a Gift Certificate that I donated to the fundraiser for the LaPlata County Humane Society. They love the snow and the Animas River in Durango so we did many of their portraits down by the water. Even though these two boys are grown men, you can tell they love their mom and they made her really happy by doing this portrait session so she could have photographs of them in her home.

If you would like to have a family portrait session, get in touch with me and also view this on my website that helps you prepare:  www.karenskellyphoto.com/portrait-session-prep.

3 Reasons to do an Engagement Session with Durango CO Photographers

My husband and I are Photographers in Durango CO and we photograph weddings all over the 4 corners area.

If you’re engaged to be married, Congratulations!  Something you may think is not important is an Engagement Session with your photographer.  Here are 3 reasons you should book a session as soon as possible:    Make sure to read all the way to the bottom for my FREE offer.

1.  You and your photographer get to know each other; each others’ personalities, how to act and pose in front of a camera, the photographer gets to know your hobbies and what you like to do.  Including your hobbies and/or job into your engagement and wedding images is one of the things that will make your images and album unique to you.  It’s also lots of fun.

2.  You get a relaxed portrait session with your fiance that isn’t as stress filled as the wedding day.  You can get romantic and have fun without a lot of other people around.  It’ll make you and your photographer much more comfortable on the big day.

3.  You’ll have a variety of different photographs to choose from that are in your street clothes.  You can use these images in an album that is also used as a guest signing book at the wedding.  How unique is that?

If you don’t want to do an engagement session, or don’t have time, another idea is to have a photo session on your bridal practice day.  You get your makeup and hair done, put on your wedding dress and have the bridesmaids all dressed up also, and have a photo session. Or you can do just a bridal portrait session.

For the first 5 couples who call me at 970.884.5292 or email me at karen@karenskellyphoto.com, I will do an engagement session or bridal practice day session FREE.  There is no obligation and I 100% Guarantee that you will LOVE your images.  If you don’t love them, I will refund your wedding fees (if you also book us for your wedding photography).

This is what the Engagement Album looks like – although I think these photographs don’t really do it justice.

A Wintry Family Portrait by Durango Photographers

This lovely family came from different parts of Texas to enjoy Christmas in the snow. It was a marvelous family reunion and, like most families who live apart, they don’t get to see each other often enough. They wanted Durango Photographers to capture some Christmas images while they were here.  They also did some skiing and snowboarding while they were here.

They were staying at Durango Mountain Resort, also known as Purgatory Resort and Ski Area. We did some of their portraits in their suite, and then went outside. There were 3 families with 6 adults and 3 children. They were all dressed in pretty holiday colors.

The little 2 yr old boy had been sick and wasn’t feeling all that great, but he cooperated (sometimes).   The whole family was so sweet because they were freezing and I continued to torture them so they would have some beautiful images to remember their time here in Durango.   After the portraits were done, the kids went out again and we got some cute shots of them playing around.  Unfortunately, the snow was too dry to do much with snowballs or building a snowman, but fun anyway.

They were very happy with their portraits and will have them as great memories to pass down to their kids. Heirloom portraits are a wonderful thing for people to enjoy for their entire lives and for generations.

Family Portraits in the Snow by Durango CO Photographers

The Dickinson and McDonald families wanted to have their portraits taken in the snow over the holidays. We all live in a subdivision called Forest Lakes which is where my husband and I are Durango CO Photographers. The Dickinsons and McDonalds are all related.

Where we live, there is an old tractor sitting near the entrance and someone puts a Santa Claus dummy on the tractor every year.  This was perfect for our first portrait location. We had to use a shovel to dig a path to the tractor because the snow was so deep.

The Dickinson’s consist of husband, wife, and doggie.  The McDonald family consists of husband, wife, and two teen daughters. We all got pretty cold, but it was still a lot of fun. The poor doggie is on the elderly side and wasn’t really enjoying any of this. He stayed in the car when we went to the second location.

The second location is one of my favorites. There are some rocks where people can sit, and some beautiful mountains in the background. We did portraits of the entire group, each family, each couple, and the girls by themselves. When we do family portraits we usually like to go to 3 different locations, but they were cold and were extremely happy with the images that we had captured of all of them.

They each ordered a framed canvas wall portrait, and the McDonald family ordered a tryptich which is a framed portrait with mom and dad in the middle and a girl on each side with a mat dividing each of them.

Here are some of their images. Enjoy!

Wedding Boudoir Session by Boudoir Photographer in Durango CO

Being a Boudoir Photographer in Durango CO is a rather novel form of photography. I know of only a couple of other photographers who do this genre. I love it – it is just so much fun and I love making ladies feel beautiful.

This lovely lady has a job that prohibits me from posting her name or portraits showing her face.  Luckily, I did take a few that didn’t show her face. Some of them I cropped so you aren’t able to see her eyes.

She is going to give the album I had made for her to her new husband when they are married. Isn’t that a great wedding night gift? What new hubby wouldn’t love to have images of his beautiful new wife for only his eyes?

I often have women who come in to do a boudoir session for themselves while they’re still young. Then they can look back on these when they’re in their 70s or 80s and remember how beautiful they were (and still are, I’m sure).

My boudoir sessions usually last a couple of hours and we fit as many outfits into that time as we can. I have a spare bedroom outfitted with antique style furniture which works perfectly for this style of photography. I also use the area behind my house where nobody can see anything, so you get some “environmental” portraits also – haha.  We drink a glass of wine to get started and loosen us both up. I’m willing to do just about anything that my lovely lady clients want.

Enjoy

Grandma and her four Granddaughters by Photographers in Durango CO

Barbara lives here in Durango CO and her 4 grand daughters were visiting her from different parts of the country. The kids parents were there to watch, but didn’t want to be in the photographs. I would have loved to do all of the families separately and together to give them family heirlooms for their children and grand children.

The fall colors were just gorgeous and makes for a beautiful backdrop for a group of beautiful people.

Grandma, of course, wanted professional photographs with all of them while they’re still young and hired us after searching for Photographers in Durango CO.  The girls are two sets of sisters.  Two with dark hair and two with blond hair. They were a hoot to try to photograph – so full of energy and didn’t want to stand or sit still for more than few seconds. Usually I only have that problem with toddlers.

I asked them to walk across the bridge, look at each other, and laugh.  They did an awesome job – I love this image. Barbara purchased prints from me and this one took front and center on her wall where she hung it.

Each of the girls had their own unique personality, which I tried to capture in their portraits. Then having them hug was an awesome sight for their parents and grandma.

Beautiful Wedding at the end of Fall by Photographers in Durango CO

Steven found us on line through a google search for Photographers in Durango CO and I was so excited that they decided to choose us to photograph their wedding.

Katie and Steven both work in the restaurant business in Denver CO.  They met several years ago through that connection and have a 2 yr old son who never stopped moving. As soon as Katie put him down during the ceremony, he was running around in circles, because that’s what 2 yr olds do. She went through the whole ceremony without a coat and wearing a sleeveless dress, which was brave of her because it was quite cold.

There were around 15 guests consisting of friends and family who all came to Durango CO to enjoy the wedding and the beautiful scenery. Many stayed to do some touristy stuff which is abundant here.

The setting at Antler’s On The Creek B&B is just gorgeous and they do a hopping wedding business as well as having guests who come just to spend a few days or a week in Durango.  The food is yummy yummy and the service is amazing.

The bouquet was by April’s Garden and Flower Shop,  Lemon Head Salon did the bride’s hair and makeup, and Chessa Gill was the minister.

These are some of their wedding images.  Enjoy!

Photographers in Durango CO Climb a Mountain to Photograph a Wedding

My husband and I photograph weddings in Durango CO, but this one was super special. It involved riding atvs and hiking a long way up a mountain, then getting hit by big hail on the way back.

Sorry there are so many photographs (not really sorry), but this was such a fun and interesting wedding.  Melissa and Chris wanted to get married at the top of Silver Mountain in the LaPlata Mountain range in Durango CO.  We ended up only going to Deadwood Mountain (when I say only, this is an 11,500 ft mountain).  The great thing is that Silver Mountain was in the background.

We (Melissa, Chris, my husband, and I) took atvs part way up the mountain and then hiked (straight up) the rest of the way to the top.  They carried Melissa’s dress and boots, Chris’ clothes and shoes, a wedding cake, two champagne glasses, and other items for their ceremony and celebration.  Melissa and Chris both changed into their wedding clothes when we arrived at the top.  Then we did a First Look which turned out to be kinda funny because Melissa had told Chris that her dress had giant flowers and and bows, so he was surprised when he turned around and saw her in her beautiful wedding dress.

After the First Look, we did the ceremony where they read their vows that were on their phones.  Then they cut the cake, toasted each other, and we did some couple portraits.  About that time, the sky turned dark, and then it started sprinkling.   They quickly changed into their hiking clothes and then it started hailing – and I mean big hail coming down really hard.  It was very painful, especially on the tender ears.  None of us had coats or hats, so we all got wet, cold and beaten up.  The hail lasted for around 1/2 hr while we tried to get off the mountain top because there is no cover up there.  We survived, but don’t think we warmed up for several hours.

They’re going to be getting a beautiful Wedding Story Book as soon as I can get it put together for them.

Durango CO Photographers and Laurie and Chris’s Engagement Session

My husband and I photographed Laurie and Chris’s engagement session along with their fur baby, Rico.  Rico is a little young and very active – it was not easy to get him to sit still. It’s like trying to get a toddler to stop moving for a few seconds – haha. I had made a sign for them so Rico could announce their engagement and wedding date. We propped it in front of him and he leaned over to read it. While reading it, he drooled right down the chalk board. Luckily, it ran between the words.

Both of them work for the US Forest Service in the Bayfield CO office. Laurie is an administrator in the office, and Chris is a wildlife biologist. Of course, that’s how they met when they ended up at the same office near Durango CO. They’ve been together for two years and were engaged in December.

They are both great, loving, and fun people.  Chris put his biology skills to work by naming the type of squirrel that had left a pile of poo on the rock they were going to sit on, then he promptly brushed it off.

Laurie plays the bagpipes in a Celtic group and Chris loves to bird watch. They both love to hike, have 3 dogs, and one cat. The cat is the boss of the household. I understand that perfectly because we have a cat as well.

They were married at Ridgewood Event Center in Durango CO on 6/21/17 and I’ll be posting their wedding photos soon.

Enjoy! and thanks for looking
